Headquartered in Irvine, California Voltaire Co is a company that set out to disrupt the coffee-making industry. By providing users with the best experience when making coffee, we created a grinder that is smart-enabled, portable, and beautifully crafted.

My job duties as Industrial Design Co-Lead/ Product Manager were to design, manage, and communicate our intentions to our partners overseas while keeping our level of quality and industrial design in the highest regard.

The Strategy

My role during this project’s duration was to ensure proper manufacturing techniques were strictly enforced to accommodate for a fast-forward product. To best perform my duties I was a resident of China for two months to perform weekly rounds with multiple vendors to ensure industrial design, BOM costs, IQC, and Verification Tests were performed on a bi-weekly schedule.

This is where concept starts to turn into reality, by keeping common manufacturing methods in mind with a nod to creative hardware design to optimize a balance in BOM cost and quality of end product.
This is where I ensure proper industrial design elements for individual products are carried through manufacturing verification tests.

Once individual products receive my approval, this is where we begin to incorporate creative exporting methods to ship products from overseas to the associated distribution centers.

The Voltaire Coffee Grinder

Duration From Late Stage Industrial Design to In Hand at DC: 14 Months

Voltaire, a sibling company to GIR: Get it Right was born to create an innovation in the coffee brewing industry. With a mission to ensure coffee beans never grow old or ever run out, the Voltaire Coffee Grinder is an IOT device that possesses the power to use its onboard VOC sensors to detect any old beans or to detect specific bean characteristics in the device. Linked with AWS the grinder would also notify the consumer whenever beans are running low as a reminder to order supplemental coffee beans.
